This book started with an interest in global warming. It was a controversial subject, and became highly politicized. My interest was in the science: what was the scientific case that humans were responsible for a warming planet? Proving such a concept seemed far-fetched to me, as proving cause-effect in large scale phenomenon seemed to me to be impossible. As a geologist I also had some knowledge of the earth’s history, which said that earth today was cooler than most other times in the past 50 million years. After all, today there are ice caps on both poles, unusual in the earth’s history. But with industrialization and the increased burning of fossil fuels, and the documented rise of CO2 in the atmosphere, I conceded that it was possible man was affecting the climate. So I decided to write a novel exploring both sides of the subject.
I actually first wrote this as a screenplay. The Bay of Pigs fiasco was a subject that had long interested me, and I thought it would make a good movie.
