In Tibet, Jesse Jamison, the teenage daughter of a former CIA agent Dr. Richard Jamison, is arrested by the Chinese military and accused of involvement in a plot to kidnap the young Panchen Lama. Jesse is tortured, imprisoned, and then escapes to join a Tibetan insurgent group fighting the Chinese.
In Taipei, Taiwanese president Chen Yung-fa declares independence from China. As an armada of Chinese ships gathers in the South China Sea, preparing to invade, his daughter Ta-ling must help him mount a defense of the island against an overpowering foe.
Set in the near future, The Ways of My Father examines the Tibetan independence movement and the consequences of a Taiwan secession from China, told from multiple perspectives.
